…Ekong Sampson says plans underway for 1st ever National Book Clubs conference

Review of the book, “The Sombre Years” by the author, Pemii Ben, a Port Harcourt-based writer, stirred an intellectual conversation at the May reading session of Uyo Book Club.
The session, which usually holds every last Saturday of the month at the Shakespeare Room of Watbridge Hotels and Suites, Uyo, brings together bookworms, who have at their disposal a wide array of books to feast on.
The author, who argued that prostitution has eaten deep into the critical spheres of the Nigerian society, especially the security and financial sectors, emphasized that recommendations in his book present a way out of the situation.
Pushing the conversation, the patron, Uyo Book Club, Dr. Ekong Sampson made clear the position of the group on the murder of Late Miss Iniubong Umoren, calling for thorough investigation into the dastardly act.
According to Dr. Ekong, the action of Uduak Frank Akpan, killer of the 26-year-old graduate of Philosophy, does not represent the lifestyle and character of Akwa Ibom people, stressing that Akwa Ibom people are loving and accommodating. Consequently, book readers unanimously agreed that there was need to pay priority attention to the proper upbringing of both the boy and the girl child to salvage the future of the country.
Also during the session, the poems, “A market outside the marketplace” and ‘A feast with termites”, written by Dr Ekong Sampson, were read by the Author. Dr Sampson, who is the chairman, Central Planning Committee of the first ever conference of Book Clubs in Nigeria, to be hosted in Uyo, also intimated that plans are in top gear for the hosting of the books fest, scheduled for September, 2021.
Earlier, founder of Uyo Book Club, Dr Udeme Nana had set the tone for the interactive session, which bothered on the theme: “22 Years of Uninterrupted Democracy in Nigeria”.
